PAULA CASTILLO
Ancient Rock (wall), 2022
This series of four rock and concrete sculptures pay homage to the New Mexican tradition of rock and mortar walls as a common inexpensive architectural and landscaping feature. For these pieces, I collected the stones and aggregate from alluvial flows off the west side of the Manzanos and the Pecos Wilderness. The work also references the bifocality of our material world and how it bears witness to our existence: mountains become granite and limestone protrusions, small hand-sized stones, tiny bits of aggregate, and finally, mortar. This work is meant to be displayed indoors and is archival-quality.
