Geometry as a means of retracing and repositioning the relationship between humans and the natural world reappears in the work of Kelly Tapia Chuning, a Xicana artist with Indígena ancestry from the Sonoran Desert and Sierra Madre. Chuning dismantles and reimagines the traditional Mexican serape as a site of decolonization, revealing histories and erasures while reviving ancestral knowledge and the spiritual bonds between humans, nature and the cosmos. Presented in Nest by Santa Fe gallery Kouri + Corrao, her Ancient One / Ocotillo Relative / Blood Memories / Sacred Bonds (2025), a work tied to ideas of the heart and healing, was selected by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for its $20,000 acquisition prize at the fair and will enter the new Cancer Center as part of its Art Experience Program. MD Anderson also acquired a work by Michelle Blade from Night Gallery.
