Joon Hee Kim: You, Me, Us is on View at Kouri + Corrao Gallery in Santa Fe

Ceramics Now - April 9, 2024

Contemporary art gallery Kouri + Corrao is tickled pink to announce Korean-born, Canada-based sculptor Joon Hee Kim’s first solo show in the United States.

“The term ‘human’ serves as a powerful metaphor that allows me to delve into the depths of our existence and unique identity,” says Kim. “These pieces serve as living testaments to life’s flow, acting as guardians and fostering innovative approaches to cultural coexistence. My goal is to comprehend and connect diverse cultural identities, embracing and celebrating their beauty. Uncovering our inner wonders embodies the ultimate joy of being human.”

You, Me, Us is comprised of twelve ceramic sculptures. Kim’s work oozes a playful nature encapsulated in various youthful figures embellished with otherworldly spheres featuring exaggerated facial expressions. Kim glazes the work with the finesse of a Michelin-star pastry chef, adorning the pieces with gold luster, mother of pearl and highly detailed decals, providing a luxurious dreamlike appearance. Her whimsical approach allows the viewer to continually notice new and exciting elements while speaking to human condition.

“I am incredibly honored to mount Joon’s first US solo show,” says managing partner Justin Kouri. “Her work is relatable on several levels, and it’s been an absolute pleasure working along side such a genuine and talented artist.”
